SBC (Soil Bearing Capacity)

Definition

Soil Bearing Capacity (SBC) is the maximum load per unit area that a soil can safely support without shear failure or excessive settlement. It is the fundamental parameter for foundation design.

Explained Simply

Before designing a foundation, a structural engineer must know the SBC of the soil at the site. SBC is determined by laboratory testing of soil samples taken from the site. Common tests include Standard Penetration Test (SPT) and plate load tests. SBC values vary significantly across Chennai — from 8 t/m² in soft clay areas to 30+ t/m² in rock outcrops. Foundation size is inversely related to SBC: lower SBC requires larger foundations.

Why This Matters for Homeowners

Using assumed SBC values without testing can result in undersized foundations that cause settlement, cracking, and structural distress.

⚠ Common Mistake

Using assumed SBC values from general soil maps without site-specific testing. Every site is different and SBC testing is not expensive compared to foundation cost.
